Apple writes letter to MPs explaining that ‘sideloading’ is as dangerous as malware

Apple has sent a letter to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, questioning an expert’s claim about “sideloading”, Apple insists its argument that the technology is a malware carrier is reasonable.

Application sideloading can be understood as sideloading, which refers to the operation mode of installing and testing third-party applications without going through the official application store and without any restrictions .

In February, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted to advance the Open Markets Act, legislation that could force Apple to allow sideloading of apps. In a continuing effort to fight the legislation, Apple has written to lawmakers about the dangers of sideloading.

Apple’s letter, which was sent on Thursday, addresses comments made by computer security expert Bruce Schneider, who said Apple’s concerns about sideloading were “unfounded,” according to Reuters .

In response, Apple argues that sideloading is beneficial to malware makers, who rely on users being tricked into downloading . Apple wrote that the App Store review process “creates a high barrier to the most common scams used to spread malware.”

While Apple agrees with some of Schneider’s claims that state-sponsored hackers have the potential to directly compromise device security, such attacks represent a “rare threat” to consumers, Apple said: “There is ample evidence that in On platforms that support third-party app stores, third-party app stores are a key malware vector.”

Apple’s letter was sent to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin and its top Republican, Chuck Grassley. The letter was also sent to Amy Klobuchar, chairman of the antitrust subcommittee, and Mike Lee, the top Republican.

In a previous letter to Senate members dated February 3, Apple said the Open Markets Act would compromise user security and privacy. Sideloading “will enable bad actors to evade Apple’s privacy and security protections by distributing apps without critical privacy and security checks”.

The Open Market Act is an antitrust bill that imposes restrictions on Apple, Google and other platform holders, and will prohibit policies that prevent sideloading, as well as forced acceptance of third-party payment systems.

According to internal sources in the mobile phone industry, a certain part of Europe has been fined 5 million euros per week since New Year’s Day this year because Apple has been failing to comply with relevant regulations. To a fine of 45 million euros, the equivalent of RMB has exceeded 300 million yuan!

The fine, which lasted more than two months, was due to the fact that Apple charged up to 30% of the commission in the payment system, which is also known as the exorbitant “Apple tax”. Many software developers in Europe have filed lawsuits against Apple many times before, and began to sue Apple in the name of “anti-monopoly” in the Apple Store.

Apple has drafted an agreement with the relevant departments this week to try to stop the departure, but it cannot stop the pace of continuing to be fined. Once the cumulative fine reaches 50 million euros, the weekly fine will be higher.

The world that Steve Jobs laid down… don’t destroy it in the hands of this generation.

Although at present, Apple Watch Series 3 still supports the latest WatchOS 8 system, but there have been hardware problems such as insufficient storage space, which means that it will be difficult to run the WatchOS 9 system that will be launched later.
